Also known as the Japanese Elm Zelkova serrata Green Vase is best known of the Zelkova varieties generally available. It makes an excellent shade tree reaching 12 – 15 m in height with a spreading crown to 10m when mature.
With a reasonably fast growth habit it has become a popular tree with landscaper. It develops a good branch structure and the foliage is attractive.
Growing well in full sun to part shade Zelkova serrata makes an excellent street tree and is useful as a medium sized shade tree in larger gardens. Widely used in car parks and other public spaces it is a tree that copes well in the urban environment. Autumn foliage variety from buttery yellow to red tones.
Look for the named cultivars
- Green Vase – Good green foliage, vase shaped growth habit with excellent golden to yellow autumn foliage. Reaches around 12 – 15 metres in height.
- Golden Flame – Smaller growing with a broader spreading crown. Reaches around 10 metres in height with a spread of around 9 metres. A slight golden tone is apparent on foliage through the year.
- Musashino – Upright columnar growth habit, reaching around 12 metres in height depending on conditions. Compact structure with a spread of 4 – 5 metres.
Being virtually free of diseases and pests it is widely grown from Victoria to Queensland.
