A spring flowering deciduous shrub,  Viburnum burkwoodii ‘Anne Russell’ has magnificent flowers as well as wonderful fragrance.

Viburnum burkwoodii ‘Anne Russell’

This is a smaller growing plant reaching around 2m (6ft) in height with a similar spread. It grows well in full sun to a little afternoon shade, is frost and drought tolerant and very easy care.

At home in the the garden border, however try to grow this Viburnum where the fragrance can be appreciated, so near a pathway is a great choice. The flowers appear in clusters, large white and tubular. The foliage is a mid green and the plant itself is more compact and with a better growth habit than other Viburnum x burkwoodii types.

Also suited to growing in containers as well as cottage gardens.

How to Grow Viburnum burkwoodii ‘Anne Russell’

  • Choose a position in full sun to part shade.
  • Give the plant enough room to grow to its natural shape, so around 2m (6ft) from other shrubs.
  • A humus rich well drained soil is best.
  • Plant at the same depth it was in the pot when purchased.
  • Water in well with a liquid seaweed fertiliser
  • Mulch around the plant to maintain a cool moist root run.
  • Fertilise in spring with a general purpose slow release fertiliser.

Pruning Viburnum ‘Anne Russell’

Given that this is Viburnum variety with a naturally tidy growth habit, and also compact it does not require as much pruning as other varieties.

Prune away and dead or damaged stems in early spring. After that it is just errant growth and some of the older wood that will need to be removed.

This is not a plant that responds well to hard pruning.
