Originally from the Mediterranean Quercus Ilex is well suited to our climate, it has been in cultivation in Australia for nearly 150 years and is a valuable evergreen shade tree.

Quercus ilex is an evergreen oak with small glossy foliage. Also commonly known as the ‘Holly Oak’ as well as ‘Holm Oak’. This is a slow growing tree that will eventually reach 20m. Originally from Southern Europe through to Northern Africa, it is a strong tree and will withstand windy conditions.

The ability to grow well in dry Australian summers makes this a very useful tree particularly in southern states.

Over recent years it has found another use, and this relates to the fact that truffles grow well beneath it.

Landscaping Uses

Widely as landscaping trees across Europe as well as in Australia. Used in parks and larger gardens and also as an avenue tree. Over time it develops a very dark coloured trunk which can be a feature.

Excellent where an evergreen tree is required as a specimen or as a shade tree. Although a little slow to become established this is a long lived tree, well suited to Australian conditions and regarded as reasonably drought tolerant when established.

It can also be pruned to create a hedge, however its slow growing nature limits this application.

Care

Best grown in full sun in a humus rich well drained soil.

We suggest providing additional water until the tree is established and mulching around the plant to help provide a cool moist root run.
