The oriental Plane tree is Platanus orientalis var. insularis and the cultivar of choice is ‘Autumn Glory’ .
This is a tall growing shade tree reaching around 15m in height with a large spreading crown. Growing well in full sun to part shade this is an excellent deciduous tree with attractive large green lobed or palmate foliage from spring to autumn, turning a brilliant orange to deep red before falling.
Flowers in spring are small and insignificant. A flaking mottled bark is attractive. Foliage is deeply dissected or incised and this differentiates it from similar species.
Landscaping Uses
This is a smaller growing tree than other cultivars. Due to its adaptability in terms of soil conditions, and its drought tolerant nature once established it is used widely as a medium to large tree in parks and gardens and also useful as a street tree. Over time the trunk will become large, the tree itself does respond to careful pruning.
This is a tree that needs a little space to show off its shape and colour. It makes a good specimen tree in larger gardens and parks, it can also ne used to line long driveways in rural areas.
