Fraxinus excelsior ‘Aurea’ (Golden Ash)
Fraxinus excelsior ‘Aurea’ (Golden Ash) is grown as a small to medium shade tree in parks and gardens. Also used as a street tree and in medium to large sized gardens where its foliage is attractive from spring through to autumn.
This is a smaller growing tree than F. Raywoodii reaching only around 6 – 8 metres high.
Used for its foliage color which is attractive during spring through summer. Golden Ash is a useful small deciduous shade tree.
Fraxinus excelsior ‘Aurea’ (Golden Ash) is a moderate to fast growing shade or specimen tree to suitable for hot climates. Pale green foliage in spring turning to a golden yellow in autumn. The root system is fairly shallow and is best planted where the roots are not disturbed by digging.
Best grown in a humus rich soil, F. excelsior ‘Aurea’ will cope with dry periods once established, however it will need water during the first few summers as well as in extended dry periods.
F. excelsior ‘ Green Glow’ has very attractive lime green foliage.

With many species Fraxinus are a hardy and versatile tree. Fraxinus Griffithii or Evergreen Ash (semi-deciduous in cool climates) is a fast growing shade or specimen tree to 8m suitable for hot climates.
Fraxinus pennsylvanica ‘Urbanite’
Fraxinus pennsylvanica ‘Urbanite’ is a fast growing shade or specimen tree to 8m suitable for hot climates.
With a good pyramidical growth habit and deep glossy green foliage Fraxinus pennsylvanica ‘Urbanite’ is widely used as a street tree as well as a shade tree in parks and medium to large sized gardens.
Autumn tones are a bronze to yellow and flowers although insignificant are a yellow to green.
Growth rate is moderate, however will be determined by soil and climate conditions. Over time Fraxinus pennsylvanica ‘Urbanite’ will reach a height of around 15m with a crown of 8m.
If pruned well in the wholesale nursery it should have a good branch structure and require little attention after planting other than remedial pruning.
Potted specimens seem to transplant well and with some initial care can put on good growth in the first season.
