The ‘Indian Bean Tree’
Catalpa bigonoides is a tough deciduous tree useful as a shade tree and for street plantings. Large green leaves tolerant of a dry position, but will perform in deeper well drained soils.
White flowers in spring and with a naturally broad spreading done shaped crown, the species is best used in landscaing in larger parks and gardens. The dwarf form is better for street planting and smaller gardens.
Best grown in a humus rich moist but well drained soil.
Some protection from wind is advisable to prevent damage. Catalpa bigonoides ‘Nana’ is a grafted specimen growing to 4m that allows a tight ball to of dense foliage to be formed. Useful for under powerlines.

- C. bigonoides – The species that will reach around 12 – 15m in height
- C. bigonoides ‘nana’ – Smaller growing to around 4m in height
- C. bigonoides ‘aurea’ – Golden green foliage
