It is the tall red flower spikes of Lobelia Tupa that make this such a wonderful landscaping plant. They do grow in well drained soil, however it is well worth amending the soil if needed to be able to grow these showy perennials. It is a plant with a strange common name ‘Devils Tobacco’ and it is frost tender, however still worth the effort.

Related to a number of more common garden plants Lobelia tupa is a perennial plant originally from Chile that is sure to make an impact in the garden. Tall red flower spikes rising above green foliage. It will reach a height of over 2m so a position towards the rear of the garden border is best.

Over time Lobelia Tupa will form a dense clump and require dividing, this is best done in early spring.

Nectar loving birds will find this a most attractive plant.

Care

A well drained humus rich soil in full sun to part shade, more shade in warmer areas, or afternoon shade if possible. Good drainage is essential for Lobelia tupa.
