One of the more interesting species with broader foliage than most. Sometimes referred to as the ‘Giant Poker’ as this one actually forms a stem or trunk over time. The flowers seem to start as a pinkish red and open to a yellow / orange. The foliage is in many respects ‘neater’ than other Kniphofia, forming a fairly uniform rosette similar to many of the aloes. It will reach 1.5m in good conditions.
Growing Conditions
Like most species Kniphofia northiae is drought tolerant once established and prefers a well drained soil in full sun. For best growth provide some water during dry summer periods. They seem to perform well in cool climates and hot alike.
Grown as an individual specimen Kniphofia northiae looks great, offsets can be removed as required. You could also grow them as a specimen in a large pot or container, the foliage will fall down ove rthe sides as a young plant.
