One of the most interesting of all of the Columbines is Aquilegia viridiflora ‘Chocolate Soldier’ or ‘Chocolate Dream’ with its spectacular two tone fragrant ‘chocolate’ brown flowers with green sepals. Flowering in spring to early summer this is an excellent plant for a position in part shade or at least protection from the hot afternoon sun.

Care and growing conditions

Like most Aquilegia, ‘Chocolate Soldier’ prefers a humus rich moist but well drained soil in a position where it is protected from the hot afternoon sun. If will grow in semi shade (dappled shade) but seems to flower more freely with morning sun. Try digging in some well rotted compost a few weeks before planting.

Water in well with some liquid seaweed fertilizer and these wonderful plants will flourish. Clumps can be divided every 3 – 4 years. Yes you can grow them from seed , if you can find it…….

Aquilegia viridiflora ‘Chocolate Soldier’ is available from the following nurseries
