Dianthus or "Garden Pinks" are a perennial plant used widely in gardens for many years. Dianthus plants are commonly called carnations, however with over 300 species of dianthus the variety availble is huge. Dianthus caryophyllus (Clove Pink) is a Dianthus species from the Mediterranean, fragrants, drought and heat tolerant. Dianthus gratianopolitanus or 'Cheddar Pinks' are similar. Dianthus or "garden pinks" enjoy full sun and a well drained soil, and no not all Dianthus are pink. With a high frost tolerance Dianthus make great border plants. Once established Dianthus do not have a high water requirement but do appreciate an occassional deep soaking.

Old flower heads on Dianthus can be removed, and a slow release fertilizer late winter will promote growth. Dianthus make great container plants. Dianthus deltoides 'Arctic Fire' is a white flowered variety with a dark ruby eye. With over 300 species including the fragrant Dianthus caryophyllus (Clove Pink) it is easy to find a spot for Dianthus in the garden border or rockery.
