Rhubarb Crowns WHOLESALE NURSERIES
Rhubarb crowns are best planted in winter. They are usually available from retailers from early to mid winter.
Crowns are simply dormant root systems usually sold in packets or loose. They need to be kept moist up to point of sale, but not wet.
Advice on planting will help the consumer feel more confident, this relates to position, drainage moisture and soil fertility.
Gardeners should be advised to prepare bed before planting, digging in well rotted compost and other organic material. Blood and Bone is a good addition.
In the home garden rhubarb should not be harvested until the second year. Every 4 – 5 years clumps should be lifted, divided, soil should be enhanced with compost and crowns replanted.
