Wholesale Durian Nurseries
A fruit with a reputation, Durian is a very popular fruit in some cultures, in others people fond it difficult to find the attraction.
The fruit certainly has a strange or ‘acquired’ taste and the fruit itself looks a little strange when growing on the tree. The fruit hangs from the branches and look a little ‘decorative’ in a strange way.
Durian fruit come from the tree Durio zibethinus and these really are a tropical to sub tropical fruit tree. The tree itself grows along waterways, they are not tolerant of saline soils at all, and are not drought tolerant. Best classed as a true tropical climate tree.
Without the wet tropical climate the tree will not thrive, in Australia production is limited to the Cape York Peninsula and the Northern Territory.
The fruit is in the form a large green spiky ball. Said to taste wonderful, and generally agreed to smell awful this is one of the most divisive fruits in terms of appeal.
- Warm Tropical Climate with year round moisture
- Defiantly no exposure to frosts
- Good drainage is essential to prevent fungal diseases
A number of named cultivars have been developed. However unless you live in the tropics, and have access to plenty of water and a very rich soil, the Durian is very difficult to grow.
- Durio zibethinus – This is the most common variety and easiest to grow.
- Durio graveolens – Commonly called ‘Durian kuning’ – This is the yellow durian.
