With deep green foliage and blue flowers Lithodora diffusa ‘Grace Ward’ is long flowering and easy care.
It forms a dense mat of foliage and grows well in full sun to a little afternoon shade. Over time it will form a mound to around 80 cm across and 15 – 25 cm in height, and it is easily pruned.
Use Lithodora diffusa ‘Grace Ward’ in a rock garden where it will happily grow between rocks and provide a great effect. This is a plant that is also suited to growing in the general garden border as well as in containers.
This plant was formerly known as Lithospermum diffusum or Lithospermum prostratum. Flowering time commences in spring, and it will continue to spot flower in summer. Flowering is longer if grown in good soil, and when protected from the heat of the afternoon sun.
Care and Growing conditions
This is an evergreen spring flowering perennial, it tolerates mild frosts and is reasonably drought tolerant. Best grown in a humus rich soil with good drainage.
In warmer climates, it is best grown in a little afternoon shade. In long dry periods some extra water will be required.
Pruning can be carried out after the main flush of flowers is over. Use hedging shears or secateurs to prune back any long stems, or simply prune back to a nice mounded shape without going back into bare wood.
