Rhodochiton atrosanguineum (Rhodochiton atrosanguineus) is commonly known as the ‘purple bell vine’. A climbing or scrambling plant originally from Mexico it is grown mainly for the hanging purple flowers.
Useful in landscaping as a climber to add colour and seasonal interest to a living wall cover. Grows well in warmer and sub tropical climates however can also be grown as far south as Melbourne in a protected position.
Rhodochiton atrosanguineum is suited to growing in hanging baskets if allowed to hang down and is pruned. It is also suited to growing containers, it will grow well in light shade.
The attractive purple flowers with a deeper purple centre are the main attraction to this useful climber.Heart shaped foliage is a good green and acts as a soft contrast to the flowers.
Grow on a trellis, or train along a fence.
