Michelia yunnanensis ‘Scented Pearl’ – Wholesale
Commonly called simply Michelia ‘Scented Pearl’, this is a small leafed and small growing cultivar with fragrant pearly white flowers. It has had a name change, however many wholesale growers still offer it under the old name.
A small shrubby plant Michelia yunnanensis (syn Magnolia laevifolia ‘Scented Pearl.) are used widely as a hedging plant. Michelia yunnanensis ‘Scented Pearl’ is a favourite form.
Evergreen and reaching 3m in height with a similar spread, the folaige is small and rounded with a glossy look. The flowers are small and white in colour.

Excellent as a background plant in the border and also suited to growing as a semi formal hedge Michelia yunnanensis ‘Scented Pearl’ is easily pruned which adds to the versatility.
Michelia yunnanensis ‘Scented Pearl’ Care
We have been growing Magnolia yunnanensis varieties as a hedge for a number of years. Once established and through the first summer they are drought tolerant and require little extra care.
- Position – Full sun for best growth.
- Height – 3m, although possibly taller.
- Spread – 2m
- Planting distance for a hedge – Best at around 1m apart for a reasonably dense hedge.
- Soil – Humus rich well drained, however tolerant of poorer soils.
- Fertilizer – A general purpose slow release fertiliser in spring seems adequate.
Pruning.
Although regular pruning is not essential, Michelia yunnanensis ‘Scented Pearl’ will be bushier and more compact if pruned lightly after flowering. It will generally respond to hard pruning as well.
Recently reclassified as Magnolias, this plant is now correctly called Magnolia laevifolia ‘Scented Pearl. These are a very easy to prune plant that once established require very little maintenance.
