Jacobinia pauciflora or ‘shrimp plant’ is a tropical to sub tropical plant that can add colour to many landscaping schemes. Wholesale growers offer improved cultivars.
Originallty form Brazil and nearby areas, this is a ploant that is best in tropical climates, however lends itself to cooler climates as long as it ha protection from frosts and is planted in a warm sunny position.
Jacobinia paucifolia is an evergreen shrub that will flower through the year in warmer climates. A medium sized shrub to around 2m the main attraction is the long tubular shaped flowers red at the base turning to yellow near the tips. They hang in small clusters all over the bush with best displays from late winter to early summer. Deep green foliage contrasts well against the bright flowers.
Easily grown in cooler climates as a container plant where it can be overwintered in a warm sunny position. The cultivar ‘Firefly’ is very popular.
