Hyophorbe lagenicaulis (Bottle Palm) Wholesale Nurseries
With a distinct and fascinating swollen trunk Hyophorbe lagenicaulis earns its name as the ‘Bottle Palm’. In the wild it is almost extinct, in cultivation it is widely grown and available from a number of wholesale nurseries in Australia.
Useful in landscaping, for although it has a relatively slow growth rate, it will reach around 5m, small enough for a wide range of applications.
The degree of swelling in the trunk does seem to vary, however generally broader with age. The trunk will develop with a pronounced series of rings which adds to the general appearance.
A spreading crown to around 5 – 6m and an attractive growth habit. Best grown in full sun with protection from strong hot winds it makes an excellent feature or background plant in a tropical garden setting.
Coping well in a coastal environment it will tolerate moderately sandy soils and does not seem to adversely affected by salt sea winds.
Excellent in a poolside setting and a good small palm tree for resorts and coastal developments.
