Hakea are a varied group of plants that can generally be easily pruned to shape from a young age.
Drought and frost tolerant they are suited to a wide range of landscaping applications.
Used as a feature plant at the back of the border or in mass plantings as screening or hedging plants they take little care once established.
The widely grown Hakea ‘Burrendong Beauty’ is but one of many varieties offered by wholesale growers in Australia.
Hakea Varieties
- H. invaginata -Medium sized shrub with brilliant pink flowers. Rounded habit to around 1 -2m.
- H. nodosa – Yellow flowers on an upright medium sized shrub to around 2m in height. Flowers in autumn
- H. salicifolia – Fast growing to around 5m also known as the ‘Willow Leafed Hakea’. Grows well in warmer climates, White flowers in spring and a naturally neat habit.
- H. sericea – Also known as the ‘Silky Hakea’ White or Pink flowers on a bush to 5m in height.
- H. laurina – Also known as the ‘Pincushion Hakea’ very attractive deep pink and white flowers. A dwarf form is available that makes an excellent addition to any garden and can be grown in a container if required.
