Brunfelsia, Plant Profile and Landscaping Uses
Brunfelsia is commonly called ‘Yesterday, Today and Tommorrow’, and also known as ‘Kiss me Quick’. Sometimes seen as an old fashioned plant, wholesale growers are now releasing new and improved varieties that have appeal to landscapers.
Widely used in Queensland gardens with its purple fragrant flowers fading over successive days. This is an evergreen shrub that will reach between 2 and 3 m depending on conditions. It will grow well in Melbourne as well, give it a sunny protected position and it will thrive.
These are a useful landscaping plant with a suckering habit.
Although best suited to warmer conditions (read Sydney and above) Brunfelsia also do well in sheltered sunny positions much further south.
Protection from frost is beneficial. Fragrant and with masses of flowers they grow well in a sunny position near a patio or deck where the perfume can be appreciated.
Brunfelsia species include:
- Puacifolia, Latifolia Americana and Australis.
Brunfelsia cultivars such as B. bonodora, ‘Sweet and petite’ which is a more compact form and other new ‘dwarf’ Brunfelsia species are also available.
