Athertonia Diversifolia or Atherton Oak
An interesting nut producing tree, Athertonia diversifolia is a medium size bushy tree that grows in rainforest areas of Queensland. Used as a bush tucker food, we have been very slow to recognise the potential value of the is tree as a commercial nut producing plant.
It grows in the rainforests of the Atherton Tableland, and would most likely be suited to cooler climate areas which gives it a greater range.
Very large leaves and a flower that is creamy white and cone shaped. The flower is followed by attractive blue to purple nuts that have a sweet taste. It is related to the Macadamia and is sometimes called the Atherton almond.
A tree with potential both as an ornamental tree for the foliage as well as a ‘Bush Tucker’ plant.
