Angophera hispida, the dwarf Angophera, is perhaps the smallest growing of this group of useful native plants.
Reaching around 6-8m in height, common name is the ‘scrub apple’ and ‘dwarf apple’. Growing naturally as a small tree or shrub, in cultivation they are grown to form a single trunk.
Originally from the Sydney area this is a versatile native tree, widely used in street plantings. Masses of creamy white flowers cover the tree in summer.
Available as tubestock, but more widely sold as advanced specimens pruned and trained to an upright habit.
Care and growing conditions
This is a tree that grows well in full sun to a little shade, drought tolerant once established. A well drained soil is essential as Angophera hispida does not like to be water logged.
Pruning is generally carries out in the nursery where trees are shaped to a single trunk with a good structure.
If not pruned shape may vary from upright and single trunked to multi trunked and twisted, which can be attractive in an informal native garden.
Excellent as a small street tree when pruned at early stages to the right form.
