Ajuga, Plant Profile and Landscaping Uses
Ajuga make a great ground cover, a tough plant with few requirements, dark blue to purple flowering stems above green, purple, pink or cream leaves. Light shade or shade and deadhead after flowering to keep neat.
All varieties make excellent landscaping plants. Grown for its dense ground coverage, easy care nature as well as attractive flowers and foliage.
Flowers are generally blue and appear as spikes above the foliage in spring to summer. Ajuga will slowly spread to colonize a large area so is best planted with this in mind.
Useful as a border plant besides pathways, in rockeries as well as for growing in containers where it can be used to underplant taller shrubs.
For mass planting space plugs at 10 – 15 cm apart for a quick dense appearance.
Best grown in a humus rich well drained soil.
Ajuga varieties
Ajuga ‘Catlins Giant’ and Ajuga reptans ‘Atropurpurea’ are popular species.
- Ajuga australis is one of two species native to Australia.
- Ajuga burgundy glow and Ajuga jungle beauty are named cultivars.
