Climbing Hydrangea – Hydrangea Petiolaris
This is a fascinating plant, for a start it is an evergreen hydrangea, and secondly Hydrangea Petiolaris its a climbing hydrangea. Now it is a vigorous plant once established so make sure it has a little space. Large white flowers that tend to last longer in a cool shaded position.
Best in a humus rich soil in part shade, a cool root run is essential. Flowers are lacecap type and like most hydranges these plants are easily pruned back
Planting and Growing
Although best where they are given space to grow, climbing hydrangeas are also well suited to growing in containers where given a frame they will make a nice pillar of foliage and flowers. Growing in a container may be a little restrictive, however in limited spaces it does work.
A little bit of a warning before planting this one. It is slow to get going, and can take a few years to flower, however in time it will reach over 7m in height and is self clinging, it grips to timber and other surfaces, so best not planted against your house, but excellent in the garden perhaps to cover an old tree trunk. Small waxy leaves and large white flowers in spring to summer.
