Cercis canadensis or Forest Pansy
Cercis canadensis is known both as the ‘Eastern Redbud’ as well as ‘Forest Pansy’. This is an excellent small growing tree or large shrub to around 5m with brilliant autumn colour with its large heart shaped leaves.
Autumn colour is excellent and combined with lovely deep pink flowers in spring, a graceful ‘arching habit’, makes an outstanding garden tree.
As indicated by the ‘Forest Pansy’ name this is really an understory tree and grows best in a humus rich moist soil in dappled shade.
To little shade will dull the autumn colours and flowering, but overexposure to hot winds needs to be avoided. So morning sun and protection from the hot afternoon sun is best.
A slightly acidic soil is best.
A few varieties are available including C. canadensis var. texensis ‘Oaklahoma’, a very heavy flowering small tree
