Carob Tree, Plant Profile and Landscaping Uses
The Carob Bean Tree is a slow growing evergreen tree growing to 10m. Native to the Mediterranean it grows well in many areas of Australia.
The botanical name is Ceratonia siliqua, glossy green foliage, flowers in summer followed by the seed pods. It is the seed pods that are used commercially for health foods as well as other products.
The Carob is a tough tree valued for its beans which are used as a chocolate substitute. Carob are best suited to warm temperate to sub tropical areas.
It does require a well drained soil and a sunny position to grow well.
Trees are either male or female, so one of each will be needed for production. As the plant has a very long taproot it is difficult to transplant trees of any size. They can be grown in very tall pots however seedling trees are never more than around 10cm -15cm in height.
