Beccariophoenix madagascariensis, Plant Profile and Landscaping Uses
Beccariophoenix madagascariensis, from Madagascar is known as the Window Pane Palm. Almost extinct in its natural habitat it is a very attractive tree and this a tough palm and will grow as far south as Sydney.
This is a tree that will reach large proportions over time, a thick robust trunk and very long fronds.
It is a relatively slow growing palm also known as the Manarano Palm, the Maruala Palm. An excellent tree to help create a tropical look. It does not have spikes (unarmed) and develops into an attractive tree over time. The name ‘window pane’ comes from the formation of the new foliage, as it emerges it appears to have a window pane cut into it. This disappears as the foliage matures.
Best grown in semi shade and in a humus rich moist soil. Propagation from seed is slow. Growth for the first 4 – 5 years is slow, however in good conditions, after 5 years growth rate improve dramatically.
Although regarded as a tropical palm tree, Beccariophoenix madagascariensis is hardy as far south as Sydney.
