Aloe are sun lovers, they thrive in a sunny warm spot and as they origineted in areas around Africa and Madagascar the need for warmth is self explanatory. With over 400 species, from low growing varieties to tree like specimens the most well know aloe is aloe vera or the 'medicine plant' which is valued for the properties of the jelly like substance from its leaves. Aloe vera is used widely in both cosmetics and medicine. Aloe aristata is a low growing variety (20cm). Aloe peacockii has almost triangular leaves, green and white speckled and a real eye catcher. Aloe juvenna is an interesting species, but difficult to find. Aloe cameronii or 'Cameron's Aloe' is originally from Zimbabwe and very popular as a landscaping feature, low spreading coppery branches and fantastic orange to red flowers during winter. Aloe Ferox is a tree aloe growing to 5m. Aloe arborescens will spread to 2m, long lasting orange flowers during winter make it a favorite.

Aloe like most succulents, are sun loving, and are generally regarded as being drought tolerant. Like yuccas and agaves, aloe require very little maintenance. Only water during aloes the growing season
