Cymbidium Orchids

:: Cymbidium Orchid Care

Cymbidium orchids can be grown in a cool climate and probably cymbidiums are the easiest orchid to start a collection with.

Where to grow Cymbidium Orchids.
Cymbidium Orchids do well in pots, and as Cymbidium orchids require a well drained soil they do best in a specialist cymbidium orchid potting mix. Cymbidium Orchids can be grown outside in a shade house in the summer months, to much direct sun will cause a yellowing of the leaves, to little light and they do not flower well, try morning sun and late afternoon light or maybe a shade house. Cymbidium orchids like a cool soil during the night, so make sure the pot is large enough. Remember that Cymbidium Orchids do require a reasonable amount of light. Can cymbidium orchids be grown in the ground, well yes, but they may not flower, grow them in an attractive pot so you can bring then inside when in flower and marvel at the long lasting (6-8 weeks) cymbidium flowers.

Cymbidiums and frost.
Cymbidium Orchids require protection from frost, especially the flower spikes.

Cymbidium orchid flowers.
Cymbidium orchids are long flowering and make an ideal indoor plant when in flower, you can bring bring cymbidium orchids inside when they start to flower. Cymbidium Orchids are widely used as a cut flower by florists. We usually wait for the buds to open before cutting cymbidium orchid flowers, they tend to do better than when cut us buds.

Fertilizing Cymbidium Orchids.
We use a slow release fertilizer twice a year, and liquid fertilizer when the orchids are actively growing. Some people recommend using a low nitrogen fertilizer during winter spring and a high nitrogen fertilizer during spring to summer.

Repotting Cymbidium Orchids
We recommend repotting cymbidium orchids every 2-3 years.
