Australian Native Orchids - Australian Orchid Species for sale online

Orchids species and cultivars native to Australia are a diverse group of plants and are becoming increasingly popular.

Native Orchids can be relatively easy to grow in Australia given the right conditions and in general it is a matter of studying the natural growing habits and climate zones.

The Australasian Native Orchid Society (ANOS) is a wealth of information with branches in all states and fantastic displays as well.

Not that many years ago it was difficult to find these orchids for sale at all, today many species and spectacular cultivars are now available. Dendrobium Speciosum (see photo right) is one of the many spectacular native orchids now available

Care

Epiphytes, the orchids that 'grow on trees' are perhaps the most widely cultivated, they are found on the east coast from Queensland to Tasmania. This group also includes what are commonly called 'rock orchids' which have a similar habit, but 'grow on rocks'.

If you are starting out with Australian Orchids consider the native Dendrobium speciosum , the rock orchid native it's a little easier in terms of care than other species. The terrestrial orchids all appreciate good air movement however with over 800 species of Australian Native Orchids it is a little difficult to be specific with growing details, needless to say conditions similar to natural environment are best. Australian Native Orchids include species such as Dendrobium, Dockrillia, Dendrobium tetragonum, Sarcochilus, Phalaenopsis, many cool growing native orchids as well as tropical Australian native orchid varieties.

Deciduous terrestrial native orchids are a little harder to find, but are available, including Caladenia, Chiloglottis, Corybas, Cyrtostylis, Diuris, Lyperanthus, Microtis, Pterostylis and Thelymitra as well as native Dendrobiums and Sarcochilus manyof these are suited to naturalizing into the woodland garden or growing in pots and containers.
