PLANTING CITRUS TREES
When planting citrus trees or indeed any fruit trees remember that like all trees citrus trees do not like to have soil or mulch liled against the trunk. Mulch or excess soil against the trunk of a tree can cause collar rot, a big problem with citrus.
STAKING CITRUS TREES
It is best to stake the tree when planting, put the stake into the ground before planting the tree, this prevents root damage, another technique is to use two stakes either side of the tree and a flexible tie between the stakes to support the tree.
FEEDING CITRUS TREES
Citrus trees are heavy feeders, well composted manure is excellent, water in well and cover the manure with mulch. Specialist slow release citrus fertilizers are also available.

CLIMATE and SOIL REQUIREMENTS and ORIGINS OF LEMONS

Lemons are originated in India and then were imported to the Mediterranean, so lemons are cold sensitive, probably the least tolerant of cold of all citrus. Lemons do not like frosts.

Lemons prefer a well drained soil, clay soils should be worked with organic matter and gyspum. Once established lemons are a reasonably tough plant, ocassional deep watering and fertilization with a citrus fertilizer will help promote growth and fruiting.

'The Eureka' lemon is originally from California. 'Lisbon', originated in Australia. The Meyer Lemon is from China.
